Hospitality
In this environment, we see two major challenges: the first challenge is to provide high-speed Internet and network access to business travelers who carry any kind of portable device i.e. notebooks, sub-notebooks, Pocket PC and Palm PDA. High-speed ADSL and cable modem usually requires an add-on card for notebooks, and is normally not available for HPC, PDA and Internet appliances.
Also, many times business travelers forget to carry a PCMCIA modem/Ethernet card or the accessory cables needed to connect their notebook when on the road. An infrared port and application software is built into virtually every portable device on the market, so why not use it! Using infrared as the computers network interface offers the ability to transfer data at up to 4Mbps, which is significantly faster than a high-speed modem.
The second challenge is offering the guest an easy method of configuring their portable device without the need to call for technical support.
The built-in infrared port with its OS software support makes setup as easy as clicking a pre-configured icon.
Furthermore, Clarinet Systems provides "ClarinetIR"TM, a freeware short cut connection program for Windows notebooks, Pocket PC and Palm handhelds. The EthIR LAN system provides an easy to use high-speed connection to access the Internet, Email, a corporate network via VPN, and printing and faxing services while the business traveler is on the road.
The EthIR LAN infrared network access point enables Internet access in each guest room, business center, coffee shop, and any public location that can be shared by an infinite number of users. System integrators will also appreciate that the EthIR LAN system can be seamlessly integrated into the Ethernet or 802.11b network infrastructure since EthIR LAN supports both 10/100 Base-T and 802.11b uplink, DHCP, and network management function.

Healthcare
Compatible with Sieman's Clincal Summary Software!
Medical professionals who need information about their patients and the latest news on health and medicine can easily do so when they connect their PDA's to the network - via the EthIR LAN™ or EthIR STAR™ infrared network system. Infrared technology provides a very secure network connection without interfering with existing medical equipment. Clarinet Systems "EthIR Beam®", an infrared network access point, can be situated at the patients bedside, a staff lounge or a nurse's workstation. Doctors and RN's can then download patent statistics, lab data, and charge capture into a PDA device real-time, to help them do a better job on the job.
The EthIR Switch with its EthIR Beam infrared network access points provides a finite number of network access points that can be shared by an infinite number of users. This provides an extremely cost effective solution since network connectivity is achieved via the infrared communications port that is a standard feature of virtually every handheld PDA today. This eliminates the need for medical professionals, or the institution, to purchase any additional hardware such as expensive low power LAN cards to gain access to the network. Furthermore the OBEX feature of EthIR STAR provides optimized performance and fast menu interaction between the PDA and the server.
Clarinet Systems' infrared technology allows PDA's network connectivity without expensive software and hardware and, more importantly, provides an open, secure HIPAA compliant solution and future expansion to IEEE P1073.3.3 Draft Standard for Medical Device Communications.

Corporate Applications:
On-demand and broad availability of network connections without the need of PCMCIA cards, cradles and accessory wires is critical in the corporate environment. Especially shared offices such as sales offices, trading companies and accounting firms. In such environments, network connectivity and high mobility is essential for users of portable devices. The EthIR LAN fulfills the need of networking all kinds of portable PCs universally and economically. A single infrared network access point, the EthIR Beam, can be shared by several users. Therefore, the cost is shared. Since there is no fragile connector between the portable PC and the infrared access point, reliability is assured. The access points can be located in any convenient location such as offices, conference rooms, lobbies, cafeterias, and even corridors for quick and easy access.
Networking Palm-size PCs:
Applications such as email, Internet browsing and LAN server synchronization of palm-size PCs such as Pocket PC and Palm Handhelds are increasing in popularity. On-demand and broad availability of network connectivity without the limitations of docking cradles and restrictive direct cabling is essential. The built-in infrared port and infrared software of every palm-size PC is ready for high-speed short-range wireless connections. The EthIR LAN provides the solution for networking palm-size PCs in the corporate environment.
Examples:
Away from the office you can simply point your Palm-Size PC toward an EthIR Beam and access your Internet service provider or corporate server for easy POP3 email retrieval, synchronization of files, pull in WEB content or browse the World Wide Web.
In the office you can easily synchronize your Palm-Size PC without being tied to your notebook via a docking cradle. Access the latest email or share files while attending meetings in the conference room, cafeteria, corridor, or anywhere an EthIR Beam infrared network access point has been stationed.

Higher Education
It is becoming an increasingly common prerequisite for most schools and universities to require their students to provide themselves with some type of portable computer such as a Palm handheld or laptop. It is also a requirement that students are able to access the institution's communications network for file sharing, information synchronization, web clippings, work assignments, and email.
A classic example of an application where the benefits of the EthIR LAN(TM) and EthIR STAR(TM) high-speed infrared LAN access system can be fully appreciated is in a classroom, library, activity center and campus buildings. In this environment the challenge is to provide network access to a potentially very large number of users with the minimum of capital investment. The EthIR Switch with its EthIR Beam infrared network access points provides a finite number of network access points that can be shared by an infinite number of users. This provides an extremely cost effective solution compared to RF LAN cards since network connectivity is achieved via the infrared communications port that is a standard feature of virtually every portable PC and handheld device today.
This eliminates the need for students, or the institution, to purchase any additional hardware such as expensive low power - LAN cards to gain access to the network. Forming an invisible link between a students handheld device and the institution's communications network infrastructure, Clarinet Systems high-speed infrared LAN access system allows for unparalleled flexibility, mobility and convenience in providing network connectivity. Network administrators will appreciate that the EthIR LAN and EthIR STAR systems can be seamlessly incorporated into existing networks and allows the full use of existing 10/100Base-T networking components without obsolescing or replacing them. Typically the school will install EthIR Beams (IR access points) in the classrooms, libraries, student activity centers, labs and hallways. Two types of EthIR Beams are available. One can sit on a table or desk and the other can be mounted on a wall.

Corporate and Manufacturing
A single smart card for multiple applications.
Today’s business managers face many challenges in ensuring that the day-to-day operations of corporate catering facilities run as smoothly as possible. Datacard's Accelus smartcard payment solution provides a means of establishing increased efficiency and control in any company’s food service operations.
- Improve Levels of Employee Satisfaction:
Implementation of the Accelus solution reduces transaction times at both Point-of-Sale and vending machines, cutting down on those lunchtime queues. This encourages people to use on-site facilities and improves the perceived level of service of company employees.
- Increase Revenue:
As service levels improve and the number of customers increases, food service and vending revenue also increases substantially.
- Accurate Control of Subsidies and Discounts:
The Accelus solutions make it easy to allocate subsidies and discounts to employees in a controlled way, so that benefits to staff are not exploited.
Any subsidies or discount entitlements are programmed onto the chip on the card and are automatically recognized by the Accelus terminal when payment is tendered. As these refresh themselves automatically on a daily or weekly basis as required, no intervention is required on the part of the system manager.
- Improve Cash flow:
By implementing the Accelus solution, charges and risks involved in handling and transferring cash are avoided. Cash in advance is also secured as funds loaded onto the card can be banked before they are actually spent.
- Build Customer Loyalty:
Once cash has been loaded onto the smart card, it cannot be spent elsewhere. Customers are therefore encouraged to use on-site facilities, ensuring high customer retention.
- Accurate Management Information at the Touch of a Button:
All components of the Accelus system can be fully networked, allowing transaction details from each loader, till and vending machine to be collected and reports quickly and easily generated.
For larger sites, sales and card activity reports can be simultaneously accessed from as many PCs as required.
- Time and Attendance Tracking and Access Control:
We have considerable experience of working closely with many providers of automated time and attendance and access control systems and can integrate the Accelus solution with that offered by such a provider.
The Accelus card can incorporate magnetic stripe, barcode or proximity technology, depending on the site requirement.
- Copying and Vending:
Accelus also offers a wide range of pre-payment and cost allocation solutions for reprographic services. The reprographic facilities of a busy company often represent a substantial overhead and implementation of Accelus’s copy management solutions can have considerable impact on efficiency, and ultimately, the bottom line.

Higher Education
A single smart card for multiple applications.
Unrivalled experience with educational institutions, acquired through years of supplying multi-application card systems, has given Datacard's Accelus Campus Solutions Division a unique understanding of the campus environment, its demand and expectations.
Many colleges and universities already employ cards, primarily for identification. The introduction of a smart card to the university identification system offers, not only the functionality of stored value, but many other useful applications designed to decrease administrative costs and increase campus revenues.
By automating small value transactions, such as buying lunch in the cafeteria, buying a drink at a vending machine, paying for library fines, paying for PC, internet and copier usage, campus administrators can reduce overheads, improve cash flow and prevent theft and vandalism.
Each student carries a smart card which can be loaded with a “cash” value. The card is based on the debit card concept so funds must be loaded onto the card before they can be spent. This secures cash in advance for the campus administration.
A range of Accelus card centers are available to load funds onto cards. Both attended and self-service models accept bank notes, coins and credit cards. Self-service student access kiosks accepting open purse smart cards issued by international banks are in development.
When value has been loaded onto the card it can be used to pay for a range of key services.
- Payment for Meals in the Cafeteria
- Payment at Automatic Vending machines
- Payment at Campus Stores
- Payment for the use of Photocopiers
- Payment for the use of Fax Machines
- Payment for the use of PCs and Network Printers
- Payment for time spent on the Internet
- Payment for Laundry Machines in Student Accommodation.
The solutions are driven by Accelus’s powerful back office software, which defines card user rights, permitting the allocation of subsidies and discounts to individual users. Accelus software also tracks, records and processes each transaction providing comprehensive management information at the touch of a button.
As a skilled systems integrator, Accelus delivers a solution centred around a multi-functional smartcard that meets the requirements of specific sites. The power of this solution is built around strategic partnerships with specialist suppliers of library management packages, student and staff identification systems, campus wide access control, time and attendance tracking, banking services and settlement software.
In addition to the chip, a variety of additional features including magnetic stripe, barcode and proximity technologies can be incorporated on the staff and student cards.
The systems integration mentioned above facilitates additional complementary card functionality including:
- Student / staff ID card identification
- External and internal door access
- Campus Residence control
- Library services
- Time and Attendance Tracking
- Examination Register
- Access to Student Records
- Student Voting
- Loyalty Schemes
Accelus’s Campus Card Solution is designed to increase revenue and reduce administrative costs in a busy campus environment.
- Reduced administration overheads
- Improved control
- Less theft and vandalism
- Faster transactions
- Reduction in inappropriate use of equipment
- Increased customer loyalty
- Enhanced information systems

School Cafeteria Systems
The provision of school meals has traditionally proved problematic for many school administrators. The allocation of free school meals, and the necessity for all pupils to be served within the allotted time period are among the difficulties traditionally encountered. In addition, parents are keen to ensure that lunch money intended for a healthy lunch in the school cafeteria is not being spent elsewhere.
By replacing cash with the latest smart card technology, the Datacard Accelus solution easily eliminates many of the problems highlighted above, providing peace of mind for school staff and parents alike.
The chip on the card carries information regarding the pupil’s entitlements and is automatically read by the Accelus Point-of-Sale. This means it is no longer necessary to issue free meal tokens on a daily basis.
Parents may opt to pre-pay their child’s meals by check at the beginning of term, so that children no longer need to carry cash to school and opportunities for bullying are therefore reduced.
The average time taken to carry out a smart card transaction is considerably less than a cash transaction, which means that a greater number of pupils can tender payment for meals in the same time period.
The Accelus solution offers the possibility of allocating a number of points to various food items. Students can therefore be rewarded for choosing fruit or vegetables as opposed to chocolate. The school may then present prizes to those pupils scoring the highest number of points.
All Accelus Point-of-Sale terminals record full transactional details. These details are collected in a central database either across a network or by download to a laptop. When the data has been collected, reports detailing, for example, the number of free school meals taken up on a particular day, can be quickly and easily generated.
- Photo ID Cards: can be customized to meet the individual’s school specific requirements. This includes the incorporation of student photographs, school logos, library barcodes and student identification numbers.
- Library and Computer Labs: The pupil’s smart card may also be printed with a barcode for library borrowing. If pupil’s are permitted to make extra-curricular use of copiers and networked printers, an Accelus terminal can also be fitted to this equipment to facilitate payment using the smart card.
- Vending Machines: An added benefit of the Accelus School Meals solution is that schools can use the same card to operate other facilities controlled by Accelus terminals. This means that pupils can also use the card to buy items at vending machines.
- Student Attendance Tracking: The card can also be used to provide automated student attendance.
- Access Control: If required, the Accelus smart card can also accommodate barcode, magnetic stripe or proximity technology for access control.
